O you who grant me the sweetness of your promises,

Far be it from you, my lord, to put me off.

For you are decisive in action, O you who

    adorn fine speech with deeds.

So strengthen my back with your kindness, and join

the loops of my rope with the cord of your bounty.

For how often your right hand has narrated to me from ʿAṭāʾ,

and spoken of generosity on Sahl’s authority.

And extend toward keeping faith a hand long

    accustomed to openhandedness and giving.

And pay me my poetry’s due, for no one

like me mingles earnestness with jest.

And do not buy my praise with thanks, O

brother to the spring of generosity and grace.

For praise is a voluntary act, but giving, my lord,

is a duty, and gratitude is not optional.

So be generous with whatever you wish, for I am a man

content with drizzle in place of a downpour.

And behold her unveiled, a virgin whose qualities

spare you any need for Nuʿm or Juml.

A bride who has spoken in pearls,

    lovely in appearance and form.

She has come toward you from my speech,

giving voice to part of me and all of me.

So adorn whatever in her is unadorned,

and leave aside whoever goes too far in reproach.

May you never cease rising in the heaven of glory,

O peerless in excellence, without equal,

as long as gray doves warble in a grove,

    and shady places lavish shade.
