رحلوا بقلبي ساعة التوديع

ماذا عليهم لو يكون جميعي
They departed with my heart at the hour of farewell.
What would it cost them if they took all of me?

فرط الجوى لم أكتحل بهجوع
And the miles of estrangement have lengthened for me, and from
the intensity of longing, I have not kohled my eyes with sleep.

دمعي حميمي والسهاد ضجيعي
And I have lost my family and friend, and now
my tears are my close companion, and sleeplessness my bedfellow.

فاجبتهم ما تلك غير ضلوعي
They spoke when their fires were at the bend;
so I answered them: “Those are nothing but my ribs.”

By God, O camel-driver through the night, be gentle with them,
for perhaps their caravan will give word of returning.

And adorn my ears with the sweetness of their speech,
for their camel-driving chant is among the sweetest sounds.
