A calamity that no other calamity resembles,
A wound like no other wound,
And tears that the clouds cannot rival,
And tears no clouds can match,

And eyelids veiled by sleeplessness,
Eyelids shrouded in slumber,
And entrails filled with burning,
Entrails aflame with ache,

And one bereaved, weeping for loved ones,
Inconsolable for loved ones lost,
Whom sickness and despondency have afflicted.
Ill and depressed is he.

Away from hopes, he finds no diversion in the flute,
No joy in music finds he,
Nor do Zaynab and al-Rabab divert him.
Zainab’s lyre cannot tempt his melancholy.
فقدتكI have lost you حافظHafiz (guardian of) الدينal-Din (the faith) المفدىthe dearly cherished one
كماjust as للسيفfor the sword قدindeed فقدhas been lost القرابthe scabbard
I have lost you, dearly cherished Hafiz al-Din,
Hafiz al-Din, beloved master,
As a sword has lost its scabbard.
Like a sword bereft of scabbard,
وكنتand I had حسبتI thought انthat الدهرtime يصفوgrows serene
فخابso failed الظنthe expectation وانخرمand unraveled الحسابthe reckoning
And I had thought that time would grow serene,
I’d thought life’s sea had calmed,
But expectation failed, and the reckoning unraveled.
But hopes proved false, calculations crumbled.
وغبتمand you have departed ياO اسوداًlions عنfrom حماكمyour protected domain
فياso, O للّهfor God's help ماwhat للأسدwith the lions غابواthey have vanished
And you have departed, O lions, from your domain.
My lions, absent from your den,
So, O God, why have the lions vanished?
What courage left when lions leave?
فحاليso my state بعدكمafter you حالa state عجيبstrange
وصبريand my patience عنكمwithout you شيءa thing عجابastonishing
So my state after you is a strange one,
My state without you strange indeed,
And my patience without you is an astonishing thing.
My patience without you a wondrous feat.
