واستشاط القلب وجدا وصبا
My ardor grew, and my endurance vanished;
My longing grew, and my patience fled.
the heart flared up with passion and yearning.
And the heart blazed with longing and yearning.

Since a radiant letter came from you,
Ever since a radiant letter came from you,
it set my lovely verses flowing.
It inspired an outpouring of my fine verses.

Longingly, when I kissed it, I said:
Longingly, as I kissed it, I said:
“A thousand welcomes to what comes from my beloved—welcome!”
"A thousand welcomes—from my beloved! Welcome!"

You claimed that your longings
And you [claimed] that your longings
fill the lands, their plains and hills.
Fill the lands, plains and hills.

Yet for all their multitude, I reckoned them
Yet despite their abundance, I reckoned them

A tiny drop, while my longing was clouds.

Do not think me lacking in courtesy;
Do not think I have offended against courtesy;
it is only hyperbole—the habitual way of literary artists.
Rather, it is exaggeration—the habit of men of letters.

For you, I bear an ever-growing longing,
So you have my ever-growing longing,
and greetings whenever the east wind blows.
And greetings whenever the east wind blows.
