The reproachers think I will forget the sweetness of your fragrance.
The reproachers thought I would forget your sweet fragrance.
How heedless my reproachers are today—and how discerning you!
How heedless my reproachers are today—and how clever you are!

O bān-tree bough, playfully bent by breeze and passion,
O radiant bough of a ban tree, love has swayed in play;
why should I not yearn for your stature and your love?
Why not? Should I not yearn for your figure, by your love?

your slanderer led you astray—or, by God, infected you?

You wounded my lovesick heart by shunning me; do you think
it was for this that the Lord proportioned and fashioned you?
the Lord shaped and perfected you for that?

Your sides sway merrily with the intoxication of youth.

When shall I see you, with Time, after all its harshness,
When shall I see you—fate, after its cruelty,
casting you, my heart’s desire, near me and letting me meet you?
having cast you beside me, O my desire—and meet you?

if I call you a sun, the sun is none but you.

The full moon claimed that it resembled you. I told it,
And the full moon said it resembled you; I told it,
“Then imitate him for me! O moon of the dark night, you are no likeness.”
"Then imitate him for me! You do not resemble him, O moon of darkness."

My heart is easily enraptured; I deserve no blame when
I thrill at hearing the sweetness of your singing.
I delight on hearing of the charm of your courtyard

In a gathering, when I sang a love prelude of you, I swayed with passion—
at a gathering—I have inclined toward you in love since my youth.
what then, if this had been at your own abode of song?
What, then, if this were at your abode?

You have made your home in a heart where you kindled a fire of ghada wood;
You dwelt in a heart where you kindled a fire of ghada wood;
what would it cost you to honor your dwelling?
what harm would it do you to honor your dwelling?
