بدر توارى فيّ من رقبائه

حذر العيون عليه من رقبائه
A full moon hid within me from his watchers,
A full moon hid within me from his watchers,
wary of the eyes his watchers fixed upon him.
for fear of his watchers’ eyes upon him.
فاقsurpassed البدورthe full moons النيراتthe radiant ones بحسنهin his beauty
فاق البدور النيرات بحسنه
والشمسand the sun تشرقshines منfrom سناthe radiance لألائهhis brilliance
والشمس تشرق من سنا لألائه
In beauty he surpassed the radiant full moons,
In beauty he surpassed the radiant full moons,
and the sun shines from the splendor of his graces.
and the sun shines from his glittering radiance.
بالبيضby the white swords والسمرand the dark spears الرشاقthe slender ones محجبscreened
بالبيض والسمر الرشاق محجب
منwho ليfor me بهwith him والموتand death دونbefore خبائهhis tent
من لي به والموت دون خبائه
Veiled behind white blades and slender brown spears—
Screened by white swords and slender dark spears,
who will gain him for me, with death before his pavilion?
who will bring him to me, with death barring his tent?
مترنحswaying الاعطافthe flanks ميلهmade him sway الصباthe east wind
مترنح الاعطاف ميله الصبا
يثنيextols علىof رياهhis fragrance طيبthe sweetness ثنائهits praise
يثني على رياه طيب ثنائه
Supple-limbed and swaying, he is bent by the east wind;
His limbs sway as the east wind bends him;
the fragrant breezes of his praise extol him.
it extols his fragrance with sweet praise.
فالروضso the garden منهfrom him قدalready تضوعwafted نشرهits fragrance
فالروض منه قد تضوع نشره
لماwhen عليهover it جرdragged فضلthe trailing part ردائهhis cloak
لما عليه جر فضل ردائه
The meadow’s fragrance has breathed forth because of him,
Thus the garden’s fragrance has wafted from him,
when he dragged across it the trailing fold of his robe.
when he drew his cloak’s trailing hem across it.
فكأنso it is as though عرفthe fragrance المسكthe musk خالطmingled with تربهits soil
فكأن عرف المسك خالط تربه
اوor درpearls كافورcamphor علىupon حصبائهits pebbles
او در كافور على حصبائه
As though musk’s perfume had mingled with its soil,
So it was as though musk’s fragrance had mingled with its soil,
or pearls of camphor lay upon its pebbles.

ريانbrimming ماءthe water الحسنbeauty شفshone through بحمرةwith redness
ريان ماء الحسن شف بحمرة
فيin خدهhis cheek والماءand the water لونthe color انائهits vessel
في خده والماء لون انائه
Brimming with beauty’s water, a blush shines through
He brims with beauty’s water, which glows red
in his cheek—and water takes the color of its vessel.
