To you I came today, O peerless one of the age,

I pour out the pain of hardship that I endure.

And today I came to you to complain of an injustice,

And worry upon worry, and harm upon harm.

And the mending of my broken heart is assured with you,

Nor is it strange if you match my brokenness with mending.

Indeed, disgrace has befallen me in wealth and honor,

And if I do not recover my money, alas for a wasted life!

And if I gain no profit from your generosity,

Then, by Time, O my lord, I am surely in loss!

And my excuse for complaining is clear, by God,

And yet my condition today is clearer than my excuse.

And I ask no reward from you except

The settlement of a debt of more than ten dinars.

I did indeed borrow them at two dinars' interest,

For a term that runs two months and one month more.

And indeed, whenever I steel myself, I melt with longing,

As I tread on something hotter than embers.

And I am not one content with a promise bidding me be patient,

For many a promise is more bitter to me than aloes.

So hasten and hurry to redress my grievance,

And favor me; do not forsake me—far be it from you to forsake!

    And here is the account of my complaint, laid out for you;

So may you ever remain, O my lord, with your breast at ease.
