May I lose my patience on the morning of parting, or my fortitude,

If ever anyone but her has crossed my mind.

Slender-waisted, supple of body, yet cruel,

My hope of her never ends, nor does my allotted span.

Wondrous in beauty—how close she once was!

Distant in union, she turns toward no one.

She was formed, O master of description, from a bough

And a gazelle of the covert, united as one.

For her figure is that of a bān-tree bough when she bends,

And her neck is the neck of a startled, fleeing gazelle.

    Her eye is kohled with the languor of coquetry;

Far be it from me to say it has recently been inflamed.

In her glance is dark-eyed beauty—what dark-eyed beauty!

In her neck is supple grace—what supple grace!

    منظم ثغرها لكن بغير يد

    Her temple-lock is adorned, though no pen has touched her;

Her teeth are set in order, yet without a hand.

Ah, how my heart burns for that sweet saliva, while

Her smiling lips now part to reveal hailstones.

Alas for what I endure in passion, and for what

Has befallen me from her glance, which blows spells into knots.

If I were told, "Die tomorrow at the bidding of love for her,"

And that would please her, I would die before tomorrow.

Were it not for the darkness of her hair, stretching so far,

I would not have spent the night lamenting to her my sleeplessness or grief.

Love led me to her as a captive is led—is there

Anyone to take my hand in love, or avenge me?

    Do not find my tears strange if they flow black;

For those tears have flowed only from my liver.

I have not forgotten a night when she lay embracing me

Until morning, with my upper arm as her pillow.

To the eye we seemed one; you would think us so,

From our deep intimacy—or two souls in one body.
