وشواني بالتجني وقلا
The one I love turned away from me and grew indifferent.
A hundred of those I loved turned away from me and kept distant,
And scorched me with unjust reproaches and spurned me.
And reproached me with estrangement, and said "No!"

A son of the Turks, stingy with a “yes,”
Among the Turks is a miserly man of wealth,
He knows nothing but the word “no.”
Who knows nothing but the word "No!"

Sleepy-lidded, he has taught me,
Drowsy-eyed, he taught me
Through his gaze, languor after vigor.
That after being active he inclines to laziness.

لا تسل بالهجر ما بي فعلا
Supple of limb, yet hard of heart;
Gentle of manner, hard of heart,
Do not ask what his desertion has done to me.
Do not hope for union from one who has acted thus.

No lover is like me in loving him;
There is none like me in love,
No, nor has anyone endured what I endure—no!
Neither he who said "No!" nor he who did so.

His glance has decreed my death by the sword,
With his sword he decided to kill me in an instant,
And he couched the spear of his stature against me.
And with his spear's point he imprisoned me.

He brandished a spear and drew his sword to strike me.
He brandished a spear and rose up against me striking-
Bewildered, I know not by which I shall be slain.
I was perplexed, not knowing how I might kill him.

O my people! of a lover free
Forever preoccupied with my ways.
Who was ever engaged in betraying me.

A perfect full moon: whenever he appears, drawing near,
The full moon appears, moving into view,
The moon, on seeing him, sets.
And the full moon sees nothing but the crescent.

His temple-lock traced a line upon his cheek;
He drew a line above his cheek, a mole on his temple,
The beauty spot dotted what he had marked there.
The beauty spot dotted it - what a shape!

God created him a fair plant
And tended him, guarding him against growth.
And nurtured him with care and provision.

حكت نظمي ونسجت الغزلا
From his front teeth and from his glances,
From his sides and his glances
I wove my verse and spun my songs of love.
My poetry was woven and my love songs composed.

And in my sickness, when he turned into a poet,
I became a hackneyed theme in love.
I went, through love, broadcasting my shame.

He is peerless as a model of beauty; therefore
He is proud in beauty, an example - and so
I have become a byword among humankind.
I have become among the deserts like an example.

He went around with the cup among his lovers,
He passed the wine cup around to his lovers
And served them a cup of rejection, filling it.
And gave them a cup of firmness and fulfillment.

His saliva - it is to me a permitted drink.

كذب العاذل فيما نقلا
The reproacher reported that I had ceased to love;
The critic has transmitted about me a consolation -
The reproacher lied in what he reported.
The critic lied in what he transmitted.

If he says I am in love, then yes;
If he says I am a lover, no indeed!
Or if he says anything else, then no.
Or anything but this, if he speaks, no!

O reproacher, do not blame me over him;
O critic, do not blame him,
I do not listen to anyone who reproaches me.
I do not listen to one who finds fault.
