وليس بممدودٍ ويلزمه المد

And what five-letter noun is sound and masculine,

What sound masculine quintain is it

Not of the extended form, yet requiring lengthening?

Neither prolonged nor requiring prolongation

فان شئت يا ذا الفهم بالذوق حله

فان شئت يا ذا الفهم بالذوق حله

ولا نصب يلقاك فيه ولا جهد

ولا نصب يلقاك فيه ولا جهد

So if you wish, O discerning one, solve it by taste,

If you wish, O wise and tasteful one, solve it

And neither weariness nor strain will meet you in it.

You will encounter in it no difficulty or strain

فما اشتق منه خذ موافق لفظه

فما اشتق منه خذ موافق لفظه

وصحف وان حرفت يلزمك الحد

وصحف وان حرفت يلزمك الحد

As for what is derived from it, take what matches its pronunciation,

Take from it a derivation agreeing with its utterance

And change its dots; and if you alter it, you incur the prescribed penalty.
