زمَان ربيعٍ أو زمان عَصيرِ
Ah, how lovely is Ijāna, however morning finds it,
How delightful a gift, whenever bestowed,
in springtime or the season of grape pressing.
In the springtime or time of late harvest.

مذانبُ ماء كاللُّجين على حصىً

كدُرٍّ بلا ثَقبٍ أَغَرَّ نثيرِ
Watercourses like silver over pebbles,
Water’s edge like polished shields on pebbles
like bright white pearls, unpierced and scattered.
Foam without a breach, copiously pouring.

غَنينا بِهِ عن عَنبرٍ وَذَرورِ
And sand—when water moistens its flank,
Sand, when touched by water, its shoulder
thanks to it, we need neither ambergris nor scented powder.
Suffices us for pure musk and fragrance.

And figs, just as stand upright upon their nipples
Figs stand on their nipples
the breasts of Zanj maidens above their chests.
Like the breasts of young Zanj girls above chests.

As though silk pavilions held brides within,
As if domes of citron within them hold brides
on couches spread with silk.
On beds spread with silk and brocade.
