وشُبْتَand you mingled لِيfor me العَذْبَsweet water بِمِلْحٍwith salt أُجاجْbitter
You shattered my vitals as glass is shattered,
You have shattered my livers like glass,
And mingled my sweet water with bitter salt.
And made the sweet bitter with salty bitterness.
وسُمْتَand you subjected قَلبيmy heart بُرحاءَagony النَّوىseparation

فَماso there is no لِماfor what خامَرهُhas overtaken it مِنْany عِلاجْremedy
And subjected my heart to separation's agony,
You have poisoned my heart with the seeds of sorrow,
So there is no remedy for what has overtaken it.
So there is no cure for the pain that plagues it.
ياO أيُّهاyou الرَّاحِلُdeparting traveler يَطْويcrosses الفَلاthe desert wastes

O departing traveler, crossing the desert wastes,
O you who departs, traversing the desert,
The wide expanses fling him into branching passes.
With wild stallions galloping through the dunes.

He has shone forth like the full moon, cleaving the darkness,
You appear like the full moon, piercing through the darkness
On a gray steed, like lightning sweeping away the dust.
With a shooting star blazing through the night.
ونَظَّمand he strung الأنُجمَthe stars عنfrom شَكَّةٍbattle-gear
فَلِلدَّياجيso for the dark nights عَنْbefore سَناهُhis radiance انْفرِاجْa parting
And strung stars from his battle-gear,
The stars are aligned despite the adversity,
So the dark nights part before his radiance.
So for the weary there is hope of relief.

Baring the forearm of resolve, he does not
With determination bared on the arm of diligence,
Turn aside for one in burning anguish and turmoil.
Not bending for one in anguish and turmoil.

He has no aim but a raid
His only intent a raid to undertake,
That he launches, or a plunge into battle's tumult.
Or a plunge into the throes of battle.
تاللهِby God ماnot الأبْطالُthe warriors مَظْلُومَةًwronged

By God, no warriors, though wronged,
By Allah, heroes are not oppressed,
Who fight other warriors on the day of battle,
When heroes battle on a day of clamor.

In a cramped strait, where the clash of lances
In dire, narrow straits, the clashing of swords,
Against bright swords brings clamor and shaking,
Amidst the white blades clamor and commotion.

Where sword-blades have shaken hands with necks,
The swords have mingled, drawing blood,
And brown spears have drawn their butt-spikes after them,
As the tips of spears collide with armor.

Are worse off than a lover who has
I am worse off than a lover with a heart,
In his breast the faintest stirring of love for you.
That quivers from even the slightest agony of your love.

O young gazelle, preying upon minds,
O wild and defiant one to moral law,
As lions devour a flock of ewes.
Like a lion preying on a flock of sheep.

You have become like the full moon, so no wonder that
You've become like the full moon, so it's no wonder
You pass the night between night journeys and pre-dawn travel.
If you disappear between the Pleiades and the Hyades.
أسْتَودِعُI entrust to اللهGod حَبيباًa beloved نَأىhas gone far away

I entrust to God a beloved who has gone far
I entrust my beloved to Allah, distant
From me; my days since he left are spent in strife.
From me, so my life without him is mired in anguish.
إنْif تَجْمَعbring together الأيَّامُthe days شَمْليmy scattered self بِهِwith him

If the days reunite me with him,
If days bring us back together,
My soul will have no further need to ask of God.
My soul will have no unfulfilled wishes before God.
