Winter came, veiled in his clouds.

    Welcome, sovereign of the seasons—welcome!

How magnificent a king he is, invested with awe!

His battalions spread across the valley flats and hills.

A season whose bounty every season shared,

So each grew, its beauty gave delight, or it became fertile.

Then, behold, spring's blossoms flaunted their beauty,

And its predawn hours grew fragrant, and it was perfumed.

And it displayed the fresh flowers' ornaments, brocaded,

And adorned with armlets, silvered, and gilded.

So you see the opening rose as a red cheek,

And see the flowers' smile as a mouth with gleaming teeth.

And the boughs' slender forms swayed like a tipsy drinker,

When the dew gave them a plentiful, satisfying draught.

And their birds rose onto the lofty boughs,

Singing to you in cooing strains, plaintive or rapturous.

And the encircling river donned its coat of mail,

When the east wind's steeds came forth to clash with it.

And the gray doves sing, and the pool claps,

And the boughs dance, and time has sought to make amends.

And summer came in its wake, following

Its footsteps in bounty, generous and fertile.

So it clothed the world in robes of warmth, and set out in the morning,

Bestowing gifts as it went east and west.

It offers every rare delight among the fruits,

And grants from them everything one would choose.

And autumn came after that, renewing

Spring's beauty and its delightful fragrance.

So it embroidered the garden's garments using its leaves,

With embroidery whose hues varied and were kindred.

And the breeze drifted with morning, bringing glad tidings

Of winter's imminent coming, bidding him welcome.

And the dense clouds laughed aloud with their thunder,

When they beheld the lightning flashes, in rapturous delight.

And all the seasons followed one another in proportion,

Until their beauty was complete and ordered.

    وبِما أنال مِنَ الحَيا وبِما حَبا

    For from winter come the sustenance and beauty of all this;

And through the rain he bestowed and the gifts he gave,

Each, in proportion to its share of his downpour,

Bestowed gifts, displayed splendor, and grew refined.

And truth attests that the bond of their order

And their mainstay were the rain-pouring clouds.
