سَبْعٌseven (nights) لِيَfor me اليَوْمَtoday أياO بُغْيَتيmy desire
سَبْعٌ لِيَ اليَوْمَ أيا بُغْيَتي
لَمdid not يَبْدُappear ليto me مَنْظَرُكَyour countenance المُشْرِقُradiant
لَم يَبْدُ لي مَنْظَرُكَ المُشْرِقُ
Today marks seven nights for me, O my heart's desire;
Seven days for me today, O my beloved
your radiant countenance has not appeared to me.
Your radiant sight has not appeared to me
ماذاwhat is this الجفاءُcoldness اللهَfor God's sake فيregarding مُغْرَمٍa lovesick man
ماذا الجفاءُ اللهَ في مُغْرَمٍ
أدْمُعُهُhis tears مِنْfrom لَوْعَةٍburning anguish تَدْفُقُpour forth
أدْمُعُهُ مِنْ لَوْعَةٍ تَدْفُقُ
Why this coldness? For God's sake, have mercy on a lovesick man
What is this aloofness to a love-smitten one
whose tears pour forth from burning anguish.
Whose tears from yearning profusely flow
أيَظْهَرُdoes … appear? البَدْرُthe full moon عَلىdespite بُعْدِهِits distance
أيَظْهَرُ البَدْرُ عَلى بُعْدِهِ
وأنتَwhile you بالقُرْبِclose by ولاand do not تُشْرِقُshine
وأنتَ بالقُرْبِ ولا تُشْرِقُ
Does the full moon appear despite its distance,
Does the full moon appear from afar
while you are close by, yet do not shine?
While you are near, yet do not shine?
