سَبْعٌseven days لِيَfor me اليَوْمَtoday أياO بُغْيَتيmy desired one
سَبْعٌ لِيَ اليَوْمَ أيا بُغْيَتي
لَمnot يَبْدُappear ليto me مَنْظَرُكَyour appearance الأبْدَعُthe most wondrous
لَم يَبْدُ لي مَنْظَرُكَ الأبْدَعُ
Today marks seven days for me, O object of my desire;
Seven days for me today, O my beloved
your most wondrous form has not appeared to me.
Your splendid view never ceases for me
ماذاwhy this الجفاءُcoldness اللهَGod (invoked in an appeal) فيconcerning مُغْرَمٍa love-stricken one
ماذا الجفاءُ اللهَ في مُغْرَمٍ
أدْمُعُهُhis tears مِنْfrom لَوْعَةٍanguish تَهْمَعُpour down
أدْمُعُهُ مِنْ لَوْعَةٍ تَهْمَعُ
Why this coldness? Fear God in your treatment of a lover
What is this aloofness to a passionate lover
whose tears pour down from anguish.
Whose tears of anguish overflow
أيَظْهَرُdoes it appear? البَدْرُthe full moon عَلىdespite بُعْدِهِits distance
أيَظْهَرُ البَدْرُ عَلى بُعْدِهِ
وأنتَand you بالقُرْبِclose by ولاand not تَطْلُعُyou rise
وأنتَ بالقُرْبِ ولا تَطْلُعُ
Does the full moon appear despite its distance,
Does the moon appear from its distance
while you are close by, yet do not rise?
While you are near, yet do not rise
