تُوميit signals بلَحْظٍwith a glance رَقيعِbrazen إلىtoward اقْتِبالthe coming of الرَّبيعِspring
The oxeye daisy's eye awoke from sleep,
The eye of spring has awoken from sleep
Signaling with a brazen glance toward the coming of spring.
It gives a tender glance towards the coming of spring
رَقَّتsoftened حَواشيthe fringes of الزَّمانِtime
والفَصْلُand the season ياO صاحِfriend ثانِsecond
The fringes of time have softened,
The edges of time have softened
And the season, my friend, is the second.
And the season, oh companion, is renewed
فَفُضَّso break خَتْمَthe seal of الدِّنانِthe wine jars
علىto اصْطِفاقِthe strumming of المَثانيthe lute strings
So break the seal of the wine jars
The seal of eternity was broken
To the strumming of the lute strings.
By the tight embrace of the years
ولتجْلُهاand unveil it ذاتَpossessing نُورٍlight ونارْand fire
رَقراقةًshimmering عنْfrom نَجيعِfresh blood كَدَمْعِlike the tears of صَبٍّa passionate lover فَجيعِgrief-stricken
And unveil it, full of light and fire,
And so it dawns with light and fire
Shimmering blood-red, like a grief-stricken lover's tears.
Sparkling from a tearful early morning rain
ذاthis الجَوُّthe sky كاسيclothed الأديمِthe surface
مُزمَّلٌwrapped فيin الغُيومِthe clouds
This sky is clothed across its face,
The weather in this eternal garb
Wrapped in clouds
Is clothed in clouds
دفاعwarding off بَردِthe chill of النَّسيمِthe breeze
فهاتِهاso bring it ياO نَديميmy drinking companion
To ward off the breeze's chill.
Shielding from the cold breeze
So bring it, my drinking companion,
So bring it here, my friend
دِفْئاًas warmth لجِسْمٍfor a body صَرِيعِlaid low by الوَقارْsolemn dignity
وطيبُand the sweetness of عيشِthe life of الخَليعِthe libertine فيin رَشْفِsipping ثغرthe mouth of البضيعِthe plump beloved
As warmth for a body laid low by solemn dignity.
As warmth for a dignified weary body
And the libertine's delight in life lies in sipping the plump beloved's lips.
And the sweetness of dissolute life in a lip's sip of wine
ماليwhat concern have I وثَنْيand turning aside العِنانِthe reins
عنfrom رَشْفِsipping بِنْتِthe daughter of الدِّنانِthe wine jars
What have I to do with turning the reins aside
What is holding back my reins
From sipping the daughter of the wine jars?
From the sip of the daughter of the vine
كلّاno indeed وشَدْوُby the song of المَثانيthe lute strings
ماnot إنat all (emphasis) أرَىI see عنهُfrom it ثانِa deterrent
No, by the song of the lute strings,
Never, though the years tighten
I see nothing to turn me away from it.
When I see it renewed
فَهاتِso bring مِنْfrom كفِّthe hand of ذاتِa woman with سِوارْa bracelet
كالبَدْرِlike the full moon عِنْدَat الطلوعِrising مُتَوّجاًcrowned بهَزيعِwith a span of night
So bring it from the hand of a bracelet-wearing woman,
So bring in your bejeweled hand
Like the full moon at its rising, crowned with a span of night.
Like the rising full moon crowned with a halo
بالنّفسwith my life ظَبْيةُa gazelle of خِدْرِa secluded chamber
بِنتُa girl of ثَمانِeight وعَشْرِand ten
My life for a gazelle of the secluded chamber,
My soul is a young gazelle
A girl of eighteen.
Daughter of eight and ten
حَلَّتْshe settled بأحْناءِin the recesses of صَدْريmy breast
ثُمَّthen تَدينُshe makes a creed بَهجْريof forsaking me
She settled in the recesses of my breast,
Who has settled in my breast
Then makes a creed of forsaking me.
Then is shy of my estrangement
ياO لائِميyou who blame me فيfor دُموعيmy tears الغِزارْabundant
دَعْنيleave me فَسَكْبُfor the shedding of الدُّموعِtears للصَّبِّfor the passionate lover أيّwhat an شَفيعِintercessor
O you who blame me for my abundant tears,
Oh you who blame my plentiful tears
Leave me be, for shedding tears is a wondrous intercessor for the lover.
Let me be, for tears are permitted for the ardent lover
ضَنَّتْshe begrudged بنَيْلِwith the attainment of الوِصالِunion
حتَّىeven بِطيبِwith the sweetness of الخَيالthe imagined presence
She begrudged me the attainment of union,
She has hoarded the attainment of union
Even the sweetness of her imagined presence.
Until fantasies no longer matter
تيَّاهَةٌhaughty ماnot تُباليshe cares
فَظَلْتُso I kept أشدوsinging بِحاليof my plight
Haughty, she does not care,
Wandering without care
So I kept singing of my plight:
So I remain singing of my state
كَمْhow long يَدومwill last ذاthis الصُّدودْshunning والنِّفارْand aversion
ياO مَنْyou who سَكَنْhave settled بَيْنbetween ضُلوعيmy ribs
How long will this shunning and aversion last?
How long will this aloofness and estrangement last
O you who have settled between my ribs,
Oh you who resides between my ribs
أَشْwhat يَعْجَبَكْpleases you فيin وُلوعيmy ardor
What pleases you in my ardor?
Are you not amazed by my passion
