    She drew in her brow until it tightened,

    And shot me with arrows of her eyes’ deep blackness.

    A graceful maiden, whose face is a paradise for me,

    Kindled a blaze between my ribs.

    Pearls were poured upon her as skin,

    Except for hair and eyes of jet.

    مَزَجتْ حُسناً بِسُوءٍ فامتزجْ

    She displays haughtiness and conceals affection;

    She mixed beauty with cruelty, and they mingled.

    They called her Muhja—“heart’s blood”—only because

    Her two eyes have shed the blood of hearts.
