Rise, bring it—wine like an abandoned lover's tears.

It has gone beyond all bounds in delicacy and radiance.

    في حُلَلِ الزَّهرِ

    These hills strut proudly

    in robes of blossom;

    they have trailed the hems

    of their green, striped cloaks.

And the late afternoons grew tender

    at the rain's tear.

So the blossoms' mouth opened in a smile, revealing a dusky hue,

and hinted at mingled musk and camphor.

    So bring it; now manifest

to my reprover is my excuse,

    in the melody of lutes

    and the ringing of pipes.

And kiss the necks of the herds,

and sip the wine's dusky lips:

a sweet drop of saliva, like molten crystal.

It struts in necklaces of light's jewels.

A haughty one passes it round,

    his appearance like dawn.

If his hands miss their mark,

    his eyes give you drink.

By God, how splendid he is,

    and how sweet he is!

A branch upon a hillock, with a young gazelle's glances,

with jeweled earrings and a cheerful countenance.

    Ah! And whoever suffers

    is entitled to reveal

how grievous is what has befallen

    the lover—such anguish of longing.

    O my reprover, be gentle,

for reproach is of no use.

How far is solace from a frightened heart,

made love's slave in a pavilion by a full moon of darkest night.

    Gently, O my heart's desires,

with the heart of your love-maddened one.

My anguish has indeed been increased

by the languor of your eyelids.

Fear God in your treatment of a lovesick one,

by letting him receive your kindness.

O wielder of power, be gentle with an abandoned lover.

You have crushed me utterly, O you who enchant the houris.
