يامنO You who يُغيثُbrings relief to الوَرىhumankind مِنْfrom بعدِafter ماthat قَنِطُواthey despaired
ارحَمْhave mercy on عِباداًservants أكفَّpalms الفقْرِpoverty قدindeed بَسَطواthey stretched out
O You who bring relief to humankind after they have despaired,
O You who brings relief to mankind after they despair
have mercy on servants who have stretched forth poverty's palms.
Have mercy on Your servants, whose poverty has humbled them
عَوَّدْتَهمYou accustomed them بَسْطَabundance أرزاقٍprovisions بلاwithout سَببٍa cause
سوىexcept جميلِbeautiful رجاءٍhope نحوهُtoward Him انْبَسطواthey reached out
You have accustomed them to abundant sustenance without a cause,
You have accustomed them to abundant provision without cause
save the beautiful hope with which they reached out toward You.
Except for the beauty of hopeful yearning towards You
وعُدْتَand You returned بالفضلِwith grace فيin وردٍcoming وفيand in صَدَرٍgoing
بالجُودِwith generosity إنif أَقْسَطواthey acted justly والحِلْمِand forbearance إنْif قَسَطواthey acted unjustly
And You have bestowed grace anew, at their coming and going,
You promised kindness in visits and in breasts
with generosity if they act justly, and forbearance if they act unjustly.
With generosity if they are equitable, and forbearance if they stray
فَضائلُvirtues ارتَبطتْbecame bound شُمُّlofty الأُنوفِnoses لَهاto them

Virtues to which the proud have bound themselves,
Virtues bound to the scent of noses because of them
and every unruly one is tethered by generosity's fetter.
And every hardship is bound by the shackle of generosity
يامنO You who تَعرَّفmade Himself known بالمَعْروفِthrough kindness فاعتَرفَتْso they acknowledged
بِجَمِّfor the abundance of أنعامهِHis favors الأطرافُthe outskirts والوسَطُand the center
O You who made Yourself known through kindness, and were thus acknowledged
O You who is known for good, so the horizons and center have recognized
for Your abundant favors by the outskirts and the center.
The beauty of Your blessings
وعالِماًand O Knower بخفيَّاتِof the hidden aspects of الأُمورِaffairs فَلاso no
وَهْمٌdelusion يجوزُis possible عَليهfor Him لاno ولاnor غَلَطُerror
And O Knower of the hidden aspects of affairs: no
And knowing the hidden truths of matters, no
delusion can befall You—no, nor any error.
Misconception can impugn You, no error
عَبْدٌa servant فقيرٌpoor ببابat the door of الجودِgenerosity مُنكسِرٌbroken
منof شأنهِhis habit أنto يُوافيcome حِينwhen يَنضَغطُhe is hard-pressed
A poor servant, broken at generosity's door,
A poor servant broken at the door of generosity
whose habit is to come when hard-pressed.
It is in his nature to arrive when squeezed
مَهْماwhenever أتىhe came لِيَمُدَّto extend الكفَّthe palm أخْجَلَهُshamed him

Whenever he comes to stretch out his palm, he is shamed
Whatever sins and disgraces come to extend his palm, they shame him
by foul deeds and sins that have exceeded all bounds.
His affairs are chaotic, his ropes cut
ياO واسعاًBoundless One ضاقَwas too narrow خَطوُthe stride of الخَلْقِcreation عنfor نِعَمٍblessings
منهُfrom Him إذاwhen خَطبواthey discoursed فيin وَصْفِهاtheir description خَبَطُواthey blundered
O Boundless One, creation's stride falls short of the blessings
O Vast, yet the steps of creation are too narrow
from You; when they speak to describe them, they stumble.
To describe Your blessings when they seek them, stumbling
وناشِراًand O One spreading بيدِwith the hand of الإجْمالِgraciousness رَحْمَتَهُHis mercy
فليسَso no يَلحقُovertakes منهُof Him مُسْرفاًa transgressor قَنَطُdespair
And O You who spread Your mercy with the hand of graciousness,
And You who spreads His mercy with the hand of summarized grace
so no transgressor is overtaken by despair of You.
So none who overindulge are deprived of hope
ارحَمْhave mercy on عباداًservants بضَنْكِwith the hardship of العَيْشliving قدindeed قَنِعُواthey were content
فأيْنَماso wherever سَقَطواthey landed بينَamong الوَرىhumankind لَقَطواthey gleaned
Have mercy on servants who have been content with a straitened life,
Have mercy on servants content with the hardship of life
so wherever they land among humankind, they glean.
Wherever they fall among mankind, they pick up scraps
إذاwhen تُوُزِّعتwas shared out الدُّنياthis world فَماthen no لَهُمُfor them

غيرَexcept الدُّجُنَّةِthe darkness لُحفٌblankets والثَّرىand the earth بُسُطُmats
When this world is shared out, they have nothing
When the world is distributed, they have nothing
but the darkness for blankets and the earth for mats.
Except rags, a cloak, and the dirt, a carpet
لكنَّهُمbut they مِنْfrom ذَراthe shelter of عَلياكَYour exaltedness فيin نَمَطٍa rank

Yet, under the shelter of Your majesty, they hold a rank
But they are of Your lofty, sublime essence
sublime and lofty-peaked, with no rank above it.
Above them no essence, their spiritual station so high
ومَنْand whoever يَكُنْis بالَّذيwith the one whom يَهواهُhe loves him مُجتْمِعاًunited

And whoever is united with the one he loves
And whoever is gathered with whom he loves
cares not whether the tribe stays or journeys far away.
Does not care if the living depart or are scattered
نحنُwe العَبيدُthe slaves وأنتَand You المَلْكُthe King ليسَthere is not سِوىanything else

We are the slaves and You are the King—there is nothing else;
We are the servants and You are the King, none but You
and anything hoped for beyond this is excess.
And everything hoped for after this has strayed
