    In your two palms is the life of soul and body.

    And in your favor lies the realm of the secret and the open.

    And in my inner self, for you, lies the hidden secret of a love,

    If my mind sought to unveil it, it would not become clear.

    مازلتُ أكْتُمهُ صَوْناً فَيَكْتُمُني

    A love that stirred within one made like air by wasting sickness;

    I have kept it hidden for safekeeping, and so it hides me.

    I have become invisible to everything except my love for you,

    Through sickness; but for nature, even it would not see me.

    Between me and love lies the clearest affinity:

    So I truly know that love, and it knows me.

    O keeper of covenants between my heart and sorrow,

    And breaker of the pact between the eye and slumber,

    ورُعْ بهَجْرِكَ قلبي يتَّصلْ شَجَني

    Torment my soul with your haughtiness, and my lovesick longing will be complete;

    And frighten my heart with your desertion, and my sorrow will be unbroken.

    For all I wish is that you frighten me,

    And my only bliss is that you torment me.

    I marvel at love—O people!—how it has become

    For the soul, a magnet for pleasures and afflictions.
