    حَسْبي بِها مِنْ جُملةِ العُمْرِ

    God be praised for four days of time;

They suffice me out of a whole lifetime.

Time bestowed them despite the stinginess

Within it, and gave them in full despite its treachery.

Calamity's eye did not awaken to them

Until they ended; then it knew, yet did not know.

How wonderful those days in Málaga,

    Amid wishes and radiant companions!

All you wished for of beauty and beautiful ones,

All you wished for of sun and full moon,

All you sought of safety and hope,

All you sought of glad tidings and cheer.

Our consciences were chaste; thus our outward selves

Were alike in public and in secret.

And our thoughts grew clear; thus our inner selves

    Mingled like wine and rainwater.

A tuneful singer moves among us,

Leaving you no need of sweetmeats or wine.

The beauty of his melody makes bodies sway,

As the breeze bends its fresh green bough.

A young gazelle catches the notes from him—

    His charms surpass all counting—

And shapes them into dance upon a foot

That almost voices the meanings of the verse.

Tell the bough to straighten its side,

If it does not understand as he understands.

In a garden where spring trailed

The train of beauty—what a sweep!

Its spreading trees embroidered with blossoms,

Its borders ringed with radiant stars.

It offers them pieces of its blossoms,

Not wrought from silver or raw gold.

    والحسنُ ألوانٌ فخُذْ عُذري

    But it is beauty that took on colors for me;

And beauty has many colors, so accept my excuse.

The breeze toyed drunkenly with its boughs,

So they embraced, waist to waist.

And embracing spreads kisses, so forward rushed

    Its flowers, mouth upon mouth.

And many a kiss had as its beginning

An embrace, and many an embrace came of drunkenness.

Not idly did the broad bean's eye grow cross-eyed,

But because of what it saw of the scene.

No indeed; nor did its nightingales cry out

Before their time except from anguish.

I would ransom our nights, which captivated us

Beneath their shade, with the bounties of time.

The last nights of Sha'ban—I marveled at them:

White, they bleached the end of the month.

And many a thing whose outcomes are praised

Had a beginning that passed unmentioned.

Were it not for scruples, I would say their rank

In worth was that of the Night of Decree.

I found no fault in them save haste

In bringing daybreak before dawn's own morning.
