أوْفىhe arrived كَماjust as زارَvisited الخَيالُthe phantom الطَّارِقُvisiting by night
أوْفى كَما زارَ الخَيالُ الطَّارِقُ
وبَداand he appeared كَماjust as التَاحَflashed البَريقُthe gleam الخافِقُflickering
وبَدا كَما التَاحَ البَريقُ الخافِقُ
He came like a phantom visiting by night,
And appeared as a flickering gleam flashes.
ماnot كانَwas بَيْنَbetween إيابهِhis return وذَهابهِand his departure
ما كانَ بَيْنَ إيابهِ وذَهابهِ
إِلّاexcept كماas رَجَعَturned back النَّواظِرَthe eyes رامِقُa watcher
إِلّا كما رَجَعَ النَّواظِرَ رامِقُ
No more time passed between his return and his departure
Than a watcher takes to turn his eyes back.
مُتَردِّدٌcoming and going ظَفَرتْgained hold بهِof him أيْديthe hands النَّوىof separation
مُتَردِّدٌ ظَفَرتْ بهِ أيْدي النَّوى
كالبَدْرِlike the full moon إمَّاeither غاربٌsetting أوor شارِقُrising
كالبَدْرِ إمَّا غاربٌ أو شارِقُ
Coming and going, caught in the hands of separation,
Like the full moon, either setting or rising.
