وصَفراءَand a yellow one قدalready سُوِّيَتْwas fashioned صَعْدَةًa lance
وصَفراءَ قد سُوِّيَتْ صَعْدَةً
ورُكِّبَand was set فيهاin it السَّناthe radiance كالسِّنانْlike a spearhead
ورُكِّبَ فيها السَّنا كالسِّنانْ
And a yellow one, fashioned into a lance,
With radiance set in it like a spearhead.
رَمَتْit assailed عنfrom شَباهاits sharp point الدُّجىthe darkness فانْثَنىso it retreated
رَمَتْ عن شَباها الدُّجى فانْثَنى
وقَدْand already شمَّرtucked up الذَّيْلَthe hem يَبْغيseeking الأمانْsafety
وقَدْ شمَّر الذَّيْلَ يَبْغي الأمانْ
From its sharp point it assailed the darkness, which retreated,
Its hem already tucked up, seeking safety.
كأنَّas though الَّذيwhat سالَflowed مِنْfrom رَأْسِهاits head
كأنَّ الَّذي سالَ مِنْ رَأْسِها
عَلىonto جِسْمِهاits body مِنْfrom دِماءِthe blood of الطِّعانْspear-fighting
عَلى جِسْمِها مِنْ دِماءِ الطِّعانْ
As though what flowed from its head
Onto its body were blood shed in spear-fighting.
