    What lies between her languid gaze and my eyelids

    is a tale whose earnestness mingles with wanton play.

    Say to her who dyed the whiteness of her fingertips

    with the blood of my tears or the blackness of my eyes,

    and took exquisite care with her patterns and writing,

    using my livers, melted by the fire of my sorrows,

    and extracted from the charcoal of my grieving heart

    a dye for the nūn-shaped curve of her joined brows:

    Where do gazelles, unadorned as they are,

    find eyebrow dye or henna for a right hand?

    هم علموك لشقوتي وفتوني

    May your keepers never be absolved of my blood;

    it was they who taught you, to my misery and infatuation.

    The red veils already held enough

    to leave me bewildered and set my tears streaming,

    until I was stricken by a blush upon brown skin,

    like tawny wine in its coloring.

    نَفْسي بذلكَ في الهَوى تُفْتيني

    To me, gazelle, you are nothing but temptation;

    my soul gives me this verdict in matters of love.

    كلُّ الَّذي ترضَيْنَهُ يُرْضِيني

    Be haughty, turn away, forsake me—I take no offense;

    whatever pleases you pleases me.

    I invoke protection for you, fearing the evil eye that

    you dread, through what is written in Yā-Sīn.

    I swear by the music of her fingers and their softness,

    and the languor of a gaze that heralds enchantment,

    and by curves that have swayed within fine cloaks,

    which, but for embraces, would split from sheer softness:

    مَيْتاً لَثابَتْ نَفْسُهُ في الحِين

    if she were one day to clasp to her breast

    a dead man, his soul would return at once;

    or if she pointed toward him with her fingertips,

    he would come to her as one bewitched.

    فاقَتْ بحُسنِ سَوالِفٍ وجُفونِ

    O sister of the sun on the horizon—save that you

    surpass it in the beauty of your neck and eyelids;

    and sister of the radiant full moon—who could grant it

    the radiance of your charms on pitch-black nights?

    Why have your two anklets fallen silent, and why

    does your roaming sash moan with longing?

    It is only that this one burns in the blaze

    of unrest, while those two dwell in blissful stillness.

    What a difference between one kept far and one drawn near!

    How could a sorrowful one's sigh remain hidden?

    Who will bring me a slender-waisted beauty, steeped

    in haughtiness beyond that of wide-eyed gazelles—

    a dusky Abbasid beauty, before whom stand

    al-Rashīd's might and al-Maʾmūn's pride?

    However I humble myself before her, she grows haughty; if I soften,

    she is harsh with me; if I seek closeness, she keeps me far away.

    Had you seen us on the morning I met her,

    you would have seen her hardness and my yielding gentleness.

    May God grant my heart redress against my eye,

    for it brought on my passion and my abasement.
