    I have lost my dignity

between a cup passed round and lips.

    The temple's scorpion lies encircled

    by gardens of cheeks,

    keeping the lover from plucking

    those tender roses.

It has denied me a sip

    of the cool saliva.

    قَدْ كَواها الأُوارُ بِجَمْرِ

    So my ribs are burning;

scorching heat has branded them with embers.

    What a rose of beauty,

    crowned with oxeye flowers,

beneath a forelock of dark cloud,

    above a face of daylight!

O my reproacher, leave me be:

I have cast off my bridle.

    No apology befitted me

since the cheek-down rose in my defense.

O crescent moon that shone forth

    among clouds of silk,

    and dawn that appeared

    above a verdant bough!

    Every heart has found solace,

while my breast is in a blaze.

How can repose be hoped for

in a heart driven frantic by abandonment?

    Ah, for love, ah,

    and the long separation!

A heart that has been seared

by the torment of thirst's fire,

    and eyelids worn thin

by a flood of streaming tears.

    You are bliss and fire:

what would it cost you to bear with my plea?

    Who will defend my heart

against the tears of my eyelids?

    They have revealed my love

    and spread abroad my sorrows.

    So I kept crying out

    in sorrow and longing:

    I have abundant tears

that voiced my secret the day they departed.
