Eid arrived, and I hastened, chanting praises,
Toward Umm al-ʿAzīz, seeking divine reward.
أُختsister ظَبيِthe gazelle of الفَلاةِthe wilderness لمْnot تَنْظُمِshe strung الحَلْthe jewelry (word continues)
يَ(completes “jewelry”) ولمand not تَرْقُمِshe painted البَنانَthe fingertips خِضاباwith henna dye
Sister to the desert gazelle, she had strung no jewels,
Nor had she painted her fingertips with henna.
عانَقَتْنيshe embraced me وقَبَّلَتْنيand she kissed me وَقالتْand she said
قَدَّسَmay sanctify اللهُGod مِنْfrom خُطاكَyour footsteps تُراباdust
She embraced me, kissed me, and said:
“May God hallow the dust of your footsteps!”
فاعْتَنَقْتُso I embraced القَضيبَthe slender branch مِنهاof her قَواماًin stature
وارتَشَفْتُand I sipped الرَّحيقَthe nectar مِنْهاfrom her رُضاباsaliva
So I embraced her figure, a slender branch,
And sipped the nectar of her lips.
لَيْتَنيif only I لَمْnot أمُدَّextended خَطواًa step إلَيْهاtoward her
فَتَنَتْنيshe bewitched me فصارَso became أجْرِيmy reward عَذاباtorment
Would that I had not taken a step toward her!
She bewitched me, and my reward became torment.
