How many a slain man of ‘Udhra, and how many wounded,

Between white necks and dark eyes!

In wars where the champions are gazelles of the

Secluded chamber, and the martyrs are lions of the lair.

    لا ولا أسْمَرٌ كسُمْرِ الجُفونِ

    No war is more bitter than a beloved’s rejection;

No, nor any dusky spear like the spears of the eyelids.

What is the wheeling of steeds beside the turning of a neck,

And the bending of spears beside a supple waist?

And swords whose blows are dealt by eyelids,

    Beside swords sheathed in scabbards?

What is an arrow beside a languid glance?

What is a bow beside a brow joined to its fellow?

May God strike down every carefree gazelle

Who sets out to kill a sorrowful lover.
