The reach of Your gentle care lies between the soul and the breath,

and the secret of Your guidance between the fire and the firebrand.

The outpouring of Your bounty has filled existence with gifts,

whether pouring down in bounty or welling forth.

What, then, can the eloquent achieve by speaking at length,

or the speechless by prolonging their silence?

You dazzle with light; no veil remains for one who looks.

You overflow with bounty; no seeker has an excuse.

And You favored us with forbearance and graciousness, revealing

the adornments of Your beauty, like dawn in the predawn gloom.

So all gather in praise, fervently supplicating,

the lowly like the lofty, the led like those who lead.

And which blessing should we thank You for first,

when thanks is one such blessing, and thanks for thanks—keep reckoning!

The best of creation suffices as a blessing so precious

that every breathing soul is powerless to give thanks for it.

Your sending the best of messengers is gift enough,

embracing both orders of beings, jinn and humankind.

A messenger of good fortune who granted us all we sought,

and a light of guidance that spared us all confusion.

    فالشِّرْكُ في مأْتَمٍ والدِّينُ في عُرُسِ

    He guarded truth's sanctuary, bringing its denier low;

so polytheism is at a wake, and faith at a wedding feast.

Light for one seeking a flame, shelter for one seeking safety,

good fortune for the fallen, bliss for the distressed.

How great he is: guidance for followers, bounty

for seekers of gifts, doom for the base unbeliever!

Through him God saved us from ruin and cleared our sight of

doubt, and cleansed us of falsehood and defilement.

Through him He guided every greedy man whose ears refused to listen,

and led every defiant man of fierce temper,

until He erased the trace of falsehood once inscribed

and established faith and worldly life on firm foundations.

Signs of bounty shone through existence in full daylight,

at which the faction of misguidance remained scowling.

To you, O refuge of the hopeful, I have been drawn

by yearnings that, however explored, cannot be measured:

tears shed in ceaseless streams down the cheek's slope,

and the kindling of longing, reflected in the folds of the breast,

    فالجِسْمُ في تَعبٍ والقَلْبُ في تَعَسِ

    and yearning's ravages, which let sickness plunder me;

so my body is weary, and my heart in misery.

Is there, then, a path to bring one bound to a far-off land

to the abode of guidance within the garden of holiness,

to the bringer of glad tidings, the warner, chosen through grace,

to the shining lamp, the noblest, the discerning?

Who will help me kiss a tomb whose kissing is a bond

for every solitary soul who finds solace in God?

    فَلَيْسَ يَعْرَى مُحِبٌّ مِنْ هَواهُ كُسِي

    A garden that favor clothed in robes of its fragrance;

so no lover clothed in love of it goes naked.

Ah, would that I knew—though my days hold me back,

and whoever drinks the cups of helplessness can devise no way—

shall I line my eyelid with dust imbued with fragrance,

and sip with my lips from its dusky shade,

and grant my cheek its wish by rubbing it in the dust,

longing for the spot trodden by a pure, holy sandal?

To You, O Lord, comes the complaint of one kept far away, held back

by his sins, so he could not rise toward what he sought.

The world's allure deceived him in youth, and he yielded to desire,

and reassured him by making light of passion, so he forgot.

O Lord, grant Your mercy in fulfilling his desire,

for Your gentleness is true gentleness in easing every hardship.

I am the needy one; bestow Your bounty, O my hope,

for I have called upon You in destitution and pennilessness.

Then blessings upon the one sent as a mercy

to creation, both jinn and humankind,

and upon his family and radiant companions, all together,

as long as morning's mouth smiles through the dusky lips of predawn gloom.
