هَلُمَّcome إلىto الرِّياضِthe gardens فَقَدْfor indeed تَردَّتْthey have clothed themselves
بأرديَةٍin mantles مِنَof الأوراقِthe leaves خُضْرِgreen
Come to the gardens, for they have clothed themselves
In green mantles of leaves.
وباتَand spent the night القَطرُthe rain يَمْشُطُهاcombing them فَوَشَّىthen adorned
بلبَّاتِupon the throats of الغُصُونِthe branches عُقودَnecklaces of دُرِّpearls
And all night the rain combed them, then adorned
The throats of the branches with necklaces of pearls.
وغَنَّتْand sang فَوْقَهاabove them الأطيارُthe birds سَجْعاًin lilting cadences
فأغْنَتْso they sufficed إذْwhen شَدَتْthey sang عَنْin place of كُلِّall زَمْرِpiping
Above them the birds sang in lilting cadences,
So that, when they sang, all piping was needless.
وقامَتْand they stood كالعَروسِlike a bride تَرُومُseeking كُفؤاًa worthy match
تَرُوقُpleasing النَّفْسَthe soul فيin مَرأىًappearance وخُبْرِand acquaintance
And they stood like a bride seeking a worthy match,
Pleasing the soul in appearance and on acquaintance.
ولاand no كُفءٌworthy match كَحُسنِكَlike your beauty فلتُجبْهاso answer her
وإنّيand indeed I ضامِنٌa guarantor of إحضارَbringing مَهْرِa bridal gift
And no match compares with your beauty—so answer her;
And I pledge to bring the bridal gift.
