    No blame falls on one who weeps over separation.

    Anguish and love-madness have decreed this.

    How can one in torment be blamed for weeping,

    when longing and sickness have worn his body down?

    Ah, the calamity of separation! If only I had not

    known what love, passion, and bonds of loyalty are.

    O you who reproach me for passion! And who can give me

    a heart, so that passion might exist?

    فَعَلى الوَجْدِ والفؤادِ السَّلامُ

    Longing and the heart have both departed;

    so farewell to longing and the heart.
