ياO قَمراًmoon مَغرِبُهُits setting-place مُهْجَتيmy heart

O moon whose setting-place is my heart,
O moon whose setting makes me lovesick,
And whose horizon is my gaze when it shines forth,
My horizon when it clears up,
قَلْtell ليme بِحقِّby the right of الوُدِّlove ياO بُغْيَتيmy desire
مَنْwho دَلَّguided عَيْنَيْكَyour eyes عَلىto مَقْتَليmy mortal spot
Tell me, by the right of love, O my desire,
Tell me, by the right of love—my darling—
Who guided your eyes to my mortal spot?
Who showed your eyes my ruin?
مَلَكْتَyou have gained mastery مِنْthrough رِقِّيَmy bondage فَلْتُعْدِso grant ليme

You hold me in bondage; so grant me
You have ruled my soul, so be gentle with me,
Kindness, and in my affairs be just.
Be easy in my affairs and steer right.

يُذيقُنيmakes me taste تِيهاًhaughtily جَنَىthe fruit of الحَنْظَلِcolocynth
May my soul ransom you—a wanton in love,
My soul ransoms you in passion, crazed,
Who haughtily makes me taste the fruit of colocynth.
Making me taste lost in the thickets.
إنْif حُلْتُI turn away عَنْfrom عَهْديْmy pledge لَكُمْto you جَفوةًout of coldness
لاmay ... not حَلَّنيrelease me اللهُGod ولاnor حَنَّfeel compassion ليfor me
If I forsake my pledge to you out of coldness,
If I break my vow to you all, estranged,
May God neither release me nor have compassion on me.
May God not loose me nor be kind to me.
