    Who will defend me against a young gazelle's unjust treatment,

    lance-like in stature, his pupils armed,

    wanton in spirit, brazen, seeing no

    punishment to fear for shedding the ardent lover's blood?

    His glances lodged within my liver

    what it could bear, and what it could not.

    عَجَباً ساغَ ومِنْهُ شَرَقي

    Beauty's sweet water flowed over his cheeks;

    how strange: it went down smoothly, yet it makes me choke!

    يا لَقَلْبِي ولِذاكَ الرَّوْنَقِ

    His blessed countenance has a radiance;

    ah, my heart—and that radiance!

    The garden bestowed upon him a bordered cloak

    of exquisite blossoms with wafting fragrance.

    So his cheeks donned the two mantles of its roses,

    and his mustache clothed itself in the leaves' hue,

    and his mouth took captive its dew-moistened blossoms,

    and his eyes held the secret of blue.

    So he is sweet fragrance, loveliness, and visions

    for a thirsty person, or a beholder, or one inhaling his scent.
