I stood, with parting's riding camels already bridled,

And souls were rent with every breath.

And he leaned toward me for farewell—yet is there

A farewell for the heart departing at the caravan's head?

I clasp him, as I long to, not for parting—

A basil sprig in whose scent all perfume is gathered.

    إنَّ الشَّفيقَ بِسُوءِ الظَّنِّ مَوْلوعُ

    It sways, so I am terrified lest it snap;

Indeed, the tender-hearted are prone to dark forebodings.

Has the one who called for parting any means of prevailing,

When death from it is seen and heard?

I see my heart off against my will—and what

Life remains for a body that bids its heart farewell?

I show my tale-bearers that I am unconcerned

About what has happened, while my heart's very core is split.

Yearning is my nature; my forgetting is a pretense.

Impossible! The innate and the contrived cannot be confused.

Indeed, when new cloth is added to worn cloth,

People discern that the garment is patched.
