And a swaying maiden, like a gazelle, with a far-reaching stride,
With a gait like a shy gazelle, so elegant
Her upper body almost breaks from sheer suppleness.
Her swaying figure nearly bends from gentleness
تَمَنَّيْتُهاI wished for her فيin حَضْرَةٍa gathering وَسْطَin the midst of رَوْضَةٍa garden
يَنِمُّtells tales عَلَيناabout us مِنْfrom خَمائِلهاits leafy bowers النَّدُّthe perfume
I wished for her at a gathering in the midst of a garden,
I wished for her presence, in a garden amidst meadows
The perfume from its leafy bowers betrays us.
Where the soft breeze makes the branches sway
فَصدَّتْso she turned away وقالَتْand she said ماwhat لِطَبعِكَwith your taste قدindeed جَفاhas grown coarse
وأيَّand what رِياضٍgardens تَبْتَغيdo you seek بَعْدَماafter أبْدُوI appear
So she turned away and said, “Why has your taste grown so coarse?
But she turned away and said “Why has your nature grown cold?
And what gardens do you seek once I appear?
What gardens do you still seek, after I have appeared?”

Its narcissus, the flowers, myrtle and roses

إذاwhen لُحْتُI appear لاحَappears الحُسْنُbeauty طُرّاًentirely وإنْand if أغِبْI am absent
فلاthen no شَجَنٌsorrow يَخْفىis hidden ولاand no حَسَنٌbeautiful thing يَبْدُوappears
When I appear, all beauty appears; and if I am absent,
When I smile with the brilliance of beauty
Then no sorrow stays hidden, and nothing beautiful appears.”
No sadness is concealed, no beauty appears”
