أنْعِمْbestow favor عَلىon مَنْwhomever تَشاءُyou wish
فأنْتَfor you حَتْماًcertainly أمِيرُهْhis ruler
Bestow favor on whomever you wish;
Bestow favor upon whom you please
for you are certainly his ruler.
You are surely their commander
واحْتَجْand be in need لِمَنْof whomever شِئْتَyou wish يَوماًone day
فماfor none سِواكَother than you أسيرُهْhis captive
And be in need of whomever you wish one day;
And defend whom you wish one day
for none other than you is his captive.
For none but you are their conqueror
واسْتَغْنِand have no need باللهِwith God's help عَمَّنْof whomever
تَشاءُyou wish أنتَyou نَظِيرُهْhis equal
And, with God's help, have no need of whomever
And be self-sufficient with God without
you wish—you are his equal.
Whom you wish, you are their peer
فالمرءُfor a person عَبْدُslave هَواهُhis desire
يَضيرُهُit harms him أوor يُجيرُهْit grants him refuge
For a person is the slave of his desire:
Man is slave to his passion
it harms him or grants him refuge.
That harms him or grants him refuge
