A valley fed by lovers’ tears;
For one slain on its bank, there is no rescuer.

Telling you how hearts are torn apart.
ياO سالكاًone walking بالحُسْنِwith beauty مَسْلكَthe path آمِنٍof one who feels safe
طَرحَhe cast اللِّحاظَglances خِلالَthrough ذاكَthat الواديvalley
O you who walk in beauty as though safe,
Casting glances through that valley:
إيَّاكbeware واحْذَرْand take care منof عُيونِthe eyes ظِبائِهِof its gazelles
فَلَقَدْfor indeed سَطاthey attacked عَدْواًas foes علىagainst الآسادِthe lions
Beware the eyes of its gazelles;
They have struck even lions as foes.
إنَّindeed العُيونَthe eyes بهِin it قَواضٍare deadly والطُّلىand the necks
بِيْضٌare white مِراضٌlanguid والظباءُand the gazelles عَواديare assailants
Eyes there are deadly, and the necks
Are white and languid; the gazelles are assailants.

Some among the gazers are more fortunate, yet those gazelles
With their graceful forms are guarded by spears.
إنّيindeed I امْرؤٌam a man ماhave زِلْتُcontinued to أحْذَرُfear بأْسَهاtheir power

I am a man who has always feared their power,
Yet despite my caution, my heart was stolen.
