قَدْindeed كَساهُclothed him الصِّيامُfasting أثوابَrobes هَجْرِestrangement
May my father be ransom for a young gazelle who puts the full moon to shame,
Whom fasting has clothed in robes of estrangement.
ظَلْتُI kept أشْدُوsinging تَعجُّباًin wonder مِنْهُat him لَمّاwhen
قامَhe rose مُسَتْوضِحاًseeking a clear view هِلالَthe crescent الفِطْرِthe breaking of the fast
I kept singing in wonder at him when
He rose to discern the crescent of fast-breaking:
أنتَyou بَدْرٌa full moon وهَبْكَand suppose, if you will لاحَappeared هِلالٌa crescent
كيفَhow يُبْغَىis sought الهِلالُthe crescent منfrom بَعْدِafter بَدْرِa full moon
You are a full moon; and suppose, if you will, a crescent has appeared—
How can the crescent be sought after a full moon?
