وظَبْيٍand a gazelle تجرَّدَstripped himself bare عنof قُمْصِهِhis shirts
وقدand he had زَرَّbuttoned up للْحُسْنِfor beauty أضْفَىmost ample قميصْshirt
And a gazelle stripped himself of his shirts,
A young man took off his shirt
yet had buttoned on beauty’s most ample shirt.
And donned the garment of beauty
وأقْبَلand he began يَسْبحُto swim فيin الماءِthe water تِيْهاًproudly
فَيَبْدُوso he appears ويَخْفَىand he disappears كَمَعْنىًlike a meaning عَويصْabstruse
And he began swimming proudly in the water,
He went swimming in the water, lost
appearing and disappearing like an abstruse meaning.
Appearing and disappearing like an elusive meaning
كأنَّas though مُحَيَّاهُhis face بَدْرُa full moon سَحابٍclouds
فَطوراًso at times يَلُوحُhe gleams وطَوراًand at times يغوصْhe dives
As though his face were a full moon among clouds,
As if his face were a moon in the clouds
now he gleams, and now he dives.
Now shining, now vanishing from sight
