ياO مَنْyou who حَصَلْتَyou attained علىto الكمالِperfection بِماthrough what رَأَتْsaw
عَيْنايَmy two eyes منهُof him مِنَof الجَمالbeauty الرَّائعِdazzling
O you who have attained perfection, as shown by what
O you who gained perfection from what
My eyes have seen of your dazzling beauty:
My eyes have seen of splendid beauty
قمرٌa moon يَرُوقُenchants وفيand in عِطافَيْthe two folds of بُردِهِhis mantle
ماwhatever شِئْتَyou wished منof كَرَمٍgenerosity ومَجْدٍand glory بارِعِsurpassing
A moon that enchants; within the two folds of his mantle
A moon pleasing in its gentle breeze
Is all you could wish of generosity and surpassing glory.
With whatever generosity and brilliance you wished
أَشكُوI complain إليكَto you منof الزَّمانِTime تحامُلاًoppression
فِيْin فضِّscattering شَمْلٍfellowship ليof mine بِقُربكَthrough nearness to you جامِعِbringing together
I complain to you of Time's oppression
I complain to you of time's oppression
In scattering the fellowship your nearness held together for me.
In dissolving our closeness with your nearness
هَجَمَassailed البعادُseparation عَليهupon it ضَنّاًout of miserliness باللِّقاwith reunion
حَتَّىuntil تَقلَّصshrank away مثلَlike بَرْقٍlightning لامِعِflashing
Separation assailed it, begrudging us reunion,
Distance attacked it stingily with meeting
Until it faded like a flash of lightning.
Until it shrank like a flashing lightning bolt
فَلَوَso, if اَنَّنيthat I ذُوa possessor of مَذْهبٍa school of thought لِشَفاعةٍfor intercession
نادَيْتُهI called to him ياO مالكيmy master (pun on Mālikī) ياO شافعيmy intercessor (pun on Shāfiʿī)
So, if I followed a school of intercession,
If only I had some means of intercession
I would call to him: 'O my master, O my intercessor!'
I would call to you "My Protector, my Intercessor"
