يَقُولُونَthey say إِنَّthat العَينَthe eye دَاعِيةa summoner of الهَوَىlove
وَلوand if صَحَّwere true ذاthis ماnot كانَتwould be النَّفسُthe soul تَعشَقُloving
They say the eye is what summons love.
They say that the eye invites desire,
And if this were true, the soul would not fall in love.
And if that were true, the soul would not fall in love.
فُؤَادُthe heart of الفَتَىthe young man لاnot عَينُهُhis eye يُوجِبُgives rise to الهَوَىlove
فَرُؤيَتُهُfor its vision مِنthan رُؤيَةِthe vision of العَينِthe eye أصدَقُtruer
The young man's heart, not his eye, gives rise to love.
The heart of a young man, not his eye, causes love.
For its vision is truer than the eye's vision.
Seeing with the heart is truer than seeing with the eye.
وَليسَand is not بُكَاءُthe weeping of العَينِthe eye حُبًّاlove وَإنَّمَاbut rather
لإشفَاقِهَاout of its compassion لِلقَلبِfor the heart تَبكِيit weeps وَتُشفِقُand feels concern
And the eye's weeping is not love; rather,
The eye's tears are not love; rather,
out of its compassion for the heart, it weeps and feels concern.
It cries and grieves for the heart's sake.
