O our jurist, who follows religion’s path, and whose
The horizon spread out before us as if
own signs have borne witness to his excellence,
It bore witness to his virtues, proofs abounded,
لوif تُبصرyou were to see ابنَIbn (son of) سعادةِSaʿāda ونديمهand his boon companion
لو تُبصر ابنَ سعادةِ ونديمه
قدalready حَلَّsettled بينهماbetween the two of them الغَزالُthe gazelle الشّاردthe straying one
قد حَلَّ بينهما الغَزالُ الشّارد
if you saw Ibn Saʿāda and his boon companion,
If you could but see the son of Sa'ada and his boon companion -
with the straying gazelle settled between them,
Gazelles wandered freely between them.
لرأيتَyou would surely see منfrom ثِقلٍheaviness عليكupon you وخِفةٍand lightness
لرأيتَ من ثِقلٍ عليك وخِفةٍ

جَبلين بينهما نسيمٌ راكد
you would see, in their weight upon you and its lightness,
You would see weight upon you, yet lightness,
two mountains with a still breeze between them.
Two mountains with languid breeze between.
