لصنائع المعروف فلتة غافل
إنif لمnot تضعهاyou place them فيin محلa place قابلreceptive
إن لم تضعها في محل قابل
Indeed, deeds of kindness are a heedless person's misstep,
The kind deeds forgotten are soon gone
If you do not bestow them upon a receptive recipient.
Unless you find for them a grateful one
كالنفسlike the soul فيin شهواتهاits desires انif لمnot تكنare
كالنفس في شهواتها ان لم تكن
وفقاًsuited لهاto it عادتthey return بضرwith harm عاجلswift
وفقاً لها عادت بضر عاجل
As with the soul and its desires: if they are not
Like breath pursuing selfish inclination
Suited to it, they bring swift harm.
That unfulfilled will turn to quick vexation
