O young gazelle, whose rejection is my lot,
while another’s lot is the happiness you bestow.
and whose gift of happiness is another's share:

I came away disappointed, while all others gained the heights through you;
My hopes are dashed, while all have gained high rank from you;
the most fortunate of love’s devotees are its basest men.
the most fortunate in love are its basest men.

A fierce thirst torments me; yet
those who frequent the watering place disdain it.
those who frequent the watering place have made me shun it.
