    فهنيئاً لكم أهلَ مِنى

    O pilgrims of God, you have attained your wishes;

    so congratulations to you, people of Mina!

    فلهذا برّحَ الشوقُ بِنا

    We have indeed known Arafat in your company;

    and so longing has sorely tormented us.

    فغُروب الدَّمع تَجري هَتَنا

    In the Maghrib we keep your remembrance flowing;

    so streams of tears flow in torrents.

    You are the beloved; we lament your absence.

    Have you lamented our absence since we parted?

    Perhaps we may encounter a vision of you

    through sweet remembrance late at night—perhaps we may.

    If time showed us compassion, it would decree

    a reunion with you at al-Munhana, the bend.

    فلَعَمري ما هَنا العَيشُ هنا

    Lightning flashed from your land late at night;

    and, by my life, life here is not sweet.

    It cleft the night with flashes and radiance,

    so we refused to taste slumber.

    How much sorrow longing has inflicted upon us,

    which, in pleasing you, became a sweet harvest!

    And how many a grieving heart at al-Khayf

    has never ceased lamenting its wasting pain for fear of parting!

    It has never been content with the breast’s ribs

    as its home, ever since it settled there.

    So the breast calls to it across the vast distance of parting:

    “Who will bring us, one day, a heart that has tired of us?”

    Take us onward, O driver of white camels; perhaps

    we may meet our flock on the day of Jam‘.

    When separation’s herald called, he meant

    none but a lovesick man wasted by grievous suffering.

    Watch the lightning for us when it flashes, and say:

    “May God reunite our company at Jam‘.”
