تَحِيّةa greeting مُشتَاقٍof one who yearns يُفَتِّقُهاhe unfolds it زَهرَاinto blossoms
Ah, is there a breeze to carry to al-Rusafi
a yearning man's greeting, unfolding it into blossoms?
فَتًىa youth كُلَّمَاwhenever استَعرَضتُI examined بِالخَيرِfor goodness ذاتهhis nature

A youth whose nature, whenever I examined it for goodness,
proved pure, like gold I had refined by smelting.
عَلِقتُI clung بِهِto him فيin الدّهرِlife عِلقَa precious possession مَضنّةٍjealously guarded
فَأَعدَدتُهُso I stored him ذُخراًas a treasure وَحَسبِيand sufficient for me بِهِis he ذُخراas a treasure
I clung to him throughout life as to a jealously guarded treasure,
and kept him as a treasure—treasure enough for me.
فأدنتنيthen brought me close الأيامُthe days منهto him مودةًin affection
عَقَدناwe contracted علىaccording to حُكمِthe rule الإِخاءof brotherhood بِهَاthrough it صِهراa marriage bond
Then the days brought me close to him in affection;
through it, under brotherhood's law, we formed a marriage bond,
علىon أنthe condition that سيهديهاhe will give her إِليّto me عقيلةًa noble maiden
منfrom الفِكرِthought يثنيhe folds الطَّرسthe page مِنfrom فَوقِهاabove her خِدراas a concealing curtain
on condition that he would give me a noble maiden
born of thought, over whom he folds the page as a curtain.
وَلَمand did not أتّهِمI mistrust تَسويفَهhis delaying غَيرَexcept أنّنيthat I
أقولُI tell لهto him شوقيmy longing لعلَّperhaps لهhe has عُذراan excuse
I have not mistrusted him for delaying; it is only that I
tell him of my longing—perhaps he has an excuse.
