And a day whose beauty makes the sun breathe forth jewels,
When the sun adorns itself with its beauty,
she silvers it at times, and at times gilds it.
It sheds its ornaments one by one and then hides them away.
تُريهshows it كَحَليِlike the adornment of مُشرِقِradiant الوَجهthe face فيin الضُّحىthe forenoon

At forenoon she shows it like jewels on a radiant face,
It shows itself like the kohl around brightened eyes in the morning,
and at evening she harbors sorrow, so it sobs.
Yet it harbors grief in the evening and then weeps.

It smiled, revealing evening's mouth, just as
It smiled from the horizon’s mouth as yellow as old miswak,
a dusky-lipped, gleaming-toothed one revealed the tooth-stick's yellow hue.
With the most radiant and brilliant of smiles.
تَجَلّيshone forth (probable reading) يهِin it (probable reading; text corrupt) غُصنٌa bough تَطَلَّعَrose into view بشرُهُhis gladness
فقُلناand we said أيَبدوdoes … appear? الصُّبحُdawn والشَّمسُwhile the sun تَغرُبُsets
A bough shone forth in it, his gladness dawning,
A branch was unveiled before it, its youthfulness appeared,
and we said, “Does dawn appear while the sun is setting?”
And we said: “Does the dawn break while the sun sets?”

And a breath of his character had greeted us,
It exhaled at us a scent from its features,
more fragrant than unsealed musk, and sweeter.
More fragrant than pure musk and most sweet.

His qualities—the wine glories in their fragrance,
Its attributes adorn the sky’s expanse with its fragrance,
and I never thought wine could marvel at a hand.
And I knew the wind marvels at the wind.
تُدارُare passed around عَلينَاto us بالكُؤوسِin goblets كَوَاكِبٌstars
إِذَاwhenever غابَvanishes مِنهَاamong them كَوكَبٌa star لاحَshines forth كَوكَبُa star
Stars are passed around to us in goblets;
Goblets are passed around to us like orbiting planets,
whenever a star among them vanishes, another star shines forth.
If a planet hides, a planet lights up.

So we drink it at his watering place [reading uncertain], and to us it is
We drink them during his visit, more delightful to us
more delightful than a blissful life, and sweeter.
Than the most delightful life and sweetest.

At a gathering of fellowship, the sun wished she could see
In a gathering of intimacy when the sun sets, if only you could see
goblets of it among the drinking companions, and drink.
Goblets passed amongst boon companions that they may drink.
يُذكِّرُنَاreminds us of دارthe abode of النَّعِيمِbliss بِحُسنِهِthrough his beauty
يُعيدُrestores شَبابَthe youth of المَرءِthe person وَالمَرءُthough the person أَشيَبُgray-haired
By his beauty he reminds us of the abode of bliss;
It reminds us of the Abode of Bliss with its beauty,
he restores a person's youth, though that person is gray-haired.
Restoring a man’s youth though the man grows old.
مَحَبَّتُناour love أضحَتhas become إِلَيهِto him وَسِيلةٌa means of approach
فَتُدنيso it draws near إِلىto مَرضَاتِهِhis approval وتُقرِّبُand brings closer
Our love has become a means of reaching him,
Our love for it has become a means
so it draws us toward his approval and brings us close.
To draw nearer to its pleasure and gain closeness.
