وَاستَبِقِand preserve رُوحيmy soul فَإِنَّfor indeed الجِسمَthe body فِيكَfor you فَنِيhas perished
Delight my eyelids with that beautiful sight.
Delight my eyes with that beautiful sight,
And preserve my soul, for my body has perished for you.
And let my soul outpace, for my body is ephemeral in you.
حَنَّتyearned لِلُقياكَto meet you نَفسِيmy soul ياO مُعَذِّبَهاits tormentor
وَاستَعذَبَتand found sweet فِيكَfor you ماwhat تَلقىit encounters مِنَof المِحَنِtrials
My soul yearned to meet you, O you who torment it,
My self longed for you, oh its tormentor,
And found sweet the trials it suffers for you.
And found your tribulations sweet.
مَولايَmy lord عَلّلsoothe عَليلاًa sick man أَنتَyou مُمرِضُهُthe cause of his illness

My lord, soothe a sick man whom you have made ill,
My Master, heal this ailing one, for you are its physician,
And be gentle with a heart where you dwell, O my solace.
And be gentle with a heart that finds peace in you, oh my peace.
دِينِيmy faith وَدُنيايَand my worldly life فيin مَرآكَbeholding you قَدindeed جُمِعاhave been united
ياO مَنone who تَجمَّعَwas composed مِنfrom بَدرٍa full moon وَمِنand from غُصُنِa bough
My faith and my worldly life have been united in beholding you,
My religion and my worldly life are combined in your reflection.
O you composed of a full moon and a bough.
Oh you who combines the full moon and the tender branch.
أَقبِلcome forward بِوَجهِكَwith your face وَاقبَلand accept مُهجَتِيmy lifeblood ثَمَناًas the price
ماthere is no لِلوصالِfor union سِوىexcept الأَرواحِsouls مِنany ثَمَنِprice
Turn your face toward me and accept my lifeblood as the price;
Come with your face, and take my soul as a price,
Union has no price but souls.
For the price of union is nothing but souls.
بِماby what بِعينَيكَin your two eyes مِنof سِحرٍmagic قَتَلتَyou slew بِهِwith it
لُبّىmy reason وَمِنand of سَقَمٍsickness أَورَثتَهُyou bequeathed it بَدَنيmy body
By the magic in your eyes, with which you slew
With the magic in your eyes that killed my determination,
My reason, and the sickness you bequeathed my body,
And left my body sick.
نَعّمgladden بِوَجهِكَwith your face مُشتاقاًone who longs لِرُؤيَتِهِto behold it
ياO مَنone who تَنَعَّمتُI found delight فيهِin him حينَwhen عَذَّبَنيhe tormented me
Gladden with your face one who longs to behold it,
I craved your face eagerly, oh you who tormented me,
O you in whom I delighted when you tormented me.
Yet I delighted in you when you tortured me.
ياO مَنone who إِذاwhenever لَمَحَتهُit glimpsed him مُقلَتيmy eye قَدَحَتit kindled
ناراًa fire تُنِيرُglows بِخَدَّيهِupon his two cheeks وَتُحرِقُنيand burns me
O you—when my eye glimpses you, it kindles
When my eyelids caught a glimpse of you, they ignited
A fire that glows upon your cheeks and burns me.
A fire that illuminates my cheeks and burns me.
عِطفاكَyour two flanks تُطمِعُinspire hope فيfor عَطفٍtenderness وَقَلبُكَand your heart ليtoward me
قاسٍhard عَلىdespite ماwhat أُقاسيI suffer فيكَfor you مِنof شَجَنِsorrow
Your flanks make me hope for tenderness, yet your heart toward me
Your tenderness makes me hope for affection, yet your heart is
Is hard, despite the sorrow I suffer for you.
Harsh with what I suffer from yearning in you.
قاسَيتُI suffered بِعدَكَin your absence ماwhat رَقَّsoftened الجَمادُlifeless matter لَهُfor it
فَماthen why لِقَلبِكِwith your heart لَمdid not يُشفِقshow pity وَلَمand did not يَلِنsoften
I suffered in your absence what softened even lifeless things;
I suffered from your absence what even inanimate objects would be too delicate for,
Why, then, has your heart neither felt pity nor softened?
Yet your heart did not show mercy or soften.
وَقَدand indeed وَهَبتُكَI gave you نَفسِيmy soul لاnot أَمُنّI claim credit بِهاfor it
فَإِنso if تَقَبَّلتَyou accept كانَتit would be أَشرَفَthe noblest المِنَنِfavors
And I have given you my soul, without claiming credit for it;
I gave you my soul, not holding it back,
And if you accept it, that will be the noblest of favors.
So if you accept, it will be the noblest of gifts.
بِاللَهِby God ياO مَنone who جَفانيhe shunned me سَلask جُفونَكَyour eyelids لِمwhy
قاسَمنَنِيthey shared with me السُقمَsickness وَاستأثَرنَand they took sole possession بالوَسَنِof drowsiness
By God, O you who have shunned me, ask your eyelids why
By God, oh you who were harsh with me, ask your eyelids why
They shared sickness with me, yet kept drowsiness for themselves.
They divided sickness between us and kept the beauty for themselves.
حَسبِيenough for me مِنَof الدَينِfaith وَالدُنياand worldly life رِضاكyour favor وَمَنand whoever

باعَsold الوَرىall humankind بِكَin exchange for you لَمnot يُنسَبbe ascribed إِلىto الغَبَنِloss in a bargain
Your favor suffices me in faith and worldly life; and whoever
It satisfies me in religion and life to have your approval. Whoever
Trades all mankind for you is not deemed cheated in the bargain.
Traded the world for you cannot be accused of loss.

In remembering you, the yearning lover finds solace in your absence,
Your memory comforts the longing lover after you,
As a stranger finds solace in loved ones and homeland.
Like the stranger is comforted toward loved ones and homeland.

يَغلِبprevails عَلىover السِرِّsecrecy شَيءٌsomething كانَit is فيin العَلَنِthe open
My love for you is known, though I conceal it; and whenever
Your love is evident even if I hide it. And when
Something overcomes secrecy, it is out in the open.
Can anything overcome what appears openly?
