أَيقدِرُis he able أَنto يَنسىforget الغَرامَpassion وَيَسلُواand cease to pine
مُحِبٌّa lover عَصىdisobeyed العُذالَthe reproachers فيin طاعَةِobedience to الهَوىlove
Can he forget passion and cease to pine—
A lover who defied his reproachers in obedience to love?
فَأَجفانُهُso his eyelids فيin قَبضَةِthe grip of السُهدِsleeplessness وَالبُكاand weeping
وَمِقوَدُهand his rein فيin راحَةِthe palm of الوَجدِpassion وَالجَوىand heartache
So his eyelids are in the grip of sleeplessness and weeping,
And his rein lies in the palm of passion and heartache.
فُؤادٌa heart بِحَرِّin the heat of الشَوقِlonging يَشكُوcomplains مِنof الظَماthirst
فَفِيfor in طَرفِهِhis gaze داءٌsickness وَفيand in ثَغرِهِhis lips دَواa cure
A heart, in longing's heat, complains of thirst;
For his gaze holds sickness, and his lips a cure.
بَدَتappeared لَكَto you أَسراريmy secrets وَأَخفانِيَand hid me الضَنىwasting sickness
فَسِرّيَso my secret مَنشُورٌunfolded وَجِسميand my body قَدalready اِنطَوىfolded in upon itself
My secrets have appeared to you, while wasting sickness has hidden me;
So my secret is unfolded, while my body has folded in upon itself.
عَجِبتُI marveled لِسِرّيat my secret ضاقَwas too narrow عَنfor كَتمِconcealing سِرِّهِits secret
فَكَيفَhow, then حَوىcontained مِنof فَرطِthe excess of حُبِّكَlove for you ماwhat حَوىit contained
I marveled at my secret, too narrow to conceal its own secret:
How, then, did it hold all it held of overwhelming love for you?
إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكُوI complain ماwhat أُجِنُّI conceal مِنof الأَسىsorrow
إِذاif لَمdo not تُبِحyou permit لِيto me أَنto أَبُوحَI speak openly وَأَشكُواand I complain
To God I complain of the sorrow I conceal,
If you do not allow me to speak openly and complain.
أَياO مُوسِراًwealthy one يَلويdelays payment بِدينٍof a debt لِمُعسِرٍto one in hardship
أَلمdo you not تَدرِknow ماwhat قَدalready جاءَwas reported فيabout مُوسِرٍa wealthy man لَوىdelayed payment
O wealthy one who delays paying a debt to a man in hardship,
Do you not know what has been said of a wealthy man who delays payment?
وَياand O مُضرِماًkindler of نارَthe fire of الجَوىheartache فيwithin جَوانِحِيmy ribs
أَتُحرِقُwill you burn رَبعاًan abode كَمhow long أَطَلتَyou prolonged بِهِin it الثَوىthe stay
And O kindler of the fire of heartache within my ribs,
Will you burn an abode where you have dwelt so long?
أَلَحَّpersisted عَذُوليmy reproacher بِالمَلامِwith blame وَلَوand if رَأىhe saw
حَبِيبيَmy beloved لاستَحيىhe would have been ashamed مِنof العَذلِreproach وَارعَوىand desisted
My reproacher persisted in blame; yet had he seen
My beloved, he would have been ashamed of his reproach and desisted.
مُحَيّاًa face كَماlike what أَبصَرتُI have seen مِنof قَمَرِthe moon of الدُجىnight's darkness
وَجيدٌand a neck كَماlike what حُدِّثتُI was told عَنabout ظَبيَةِthe female gazelle of اللِوىal-Liwa
A face like the moon I have seen in the dark of night,
And a neck like that of al-Liwa's gazelle, as I have been told,
وَطَرفٌand a gaze ضَعِيفٌweak مثلَlike حُجّهِthe argument of لائِميmy reproacher
عَلىagainst حُبِّهِlove for him أَوor مثلlike صَبرِيَmy patience لِلنَوىwith separation
And a gaze as weak as my reproacher's argument
Against my love for him, or as my patience in separation.
يُسَدِّدُhe aims مِنfrom جَفنَيهِhis two eyelids نَحوِيَtoward me أَسهُماًarrows
مَواقِعُهاtheir points of impact مِنّيin me المقاتِلُthe vital spots لاnot الشَوىthe non-vital extremities
He aims arrows from his two eyelids toward me;
They strike my vital spots, not my extremities.
يُميتُhe kills بِلَحظٍwith a glance ثُمَّthen يُحييhe revives بِرَشفَةٍwith a sip
فَفِيfor in طَرفِهِhis gaze داءٌsickness وَفيand in ثَغرِهِhis lips دَواa cure
He kills with a glance, then revives with a sip;
For his gaze holds sickness, and his lips a cure.
إِذاwhen عُدَّare counted فُرسانُthe knights of الهَوىlove مِثلُsuch as عُروَةٍUrwa
وَقُيسٍand Qays فَإِنّيthen indeed I فِيهُمamong them حامِلُthe bearer of اللِواthe standard
When the knights of love are counted, such as Urwa
And Qays, I am the standard-bearer among them.
وَلَمand did not أَنسَI forget فِكريmy thoughts ساعَةَat the hour of البينِparting مَوقفِيmy stance
وَمُنآدُand the bowed part of أَضلاعيmy ribs زَفيرٌa sigh قدِalready اِستَوىstood upright
Nor have I forgotten, in my thoughts, my stance at the hour of parting,
And a sigh had risen straight amid my bowed ribs;
وَعَينِيَand my eye تَدمىbleeds ثُمَّthen تَدمَعُsheds tears تارَةًat times
فَتَنثُرso it scatters ياقُوتاًrubies هُناكَthere وَلُؤلُواand pearls
And my eye bleeds, then at times sheds tears,
So it scatters rubies there, and pearls.
تَوَلَّواthey departed بِقَلبِيwith my heart كَيفَhow بِالعَيشwith life بَعدَهُمafter them
وَخَلَّواand left فُؤاديmy heart مِثلَlike رَبعِهِمُtheir dwelling قَوىdesolate
They departed with my heart—how can I live after them?
And left my heart desolate, like their dwelling.
فَإِنso if كانَwas مَحبُوبِيmy beloved أَرادَintended مَنِيّتِيmy death
فَقَدthen indeed نالَexacted مِنّيfrom me بِالنَوىthrough separation فَوقَbeyond ماwhat نَوىhe intended
So if my beloved intended my death,
Then through separation he has exacted from me more than he intended.
مَواثيقُهُhis pledges مَرعِيّةhonored جارَhe acted unjustly أَوor رَعىhe kept faith
وَمَثواهُand his abode فيin طَيِّthe folds of الحَشىthe heart سارَhe departed أَوor ثَوىhe stayed
His pledges remain honored, whether he wrongs me or keeps faith;
And his abode is in the folds of my heart, whether he departs or stays.
