Is there a guardian for the heart against the bracelet-wearer's deadly assault?

And her arrows are glances, and the bow an eyebrow.

A Hilali beauty—her crown kept the crescent all night

Envious, while the stars grew jealous of her jewels.

If you wish for a sun amid night's gloom, look when

    Those tresses frame that cheek.

Her speech and her smile make peace with my heart,

While her eyelids wage war at every moment.

When her beauty shines forth, it overwhelms reason,

And the battalions of noble patience are routed.

And why not, when from her flanks and her eyelids

Lances are brandished, or keen swords drawn?

The rose-red hue of her cheeks resembles my tears,

And her slender waist is a match for my body.

So many bonds of love lie between me and her,

Yet however I plead, I am disappointed.

Ah, pity the yearning lover who humbled himself before love,

Though through him the ranks of honor had risen high.

Thick-necked lions fear his spearhead's edge,

Yet he fears the innocent gazelle-fawn.

And he takes valiant champions captive in the thick of battle,

While full-bosomed beauties take him captive with coquetry.

May God preserve my heart—how complete its loyalty,

When a dear friend turns away or a companion changes!

It stands alone in devotion to the creed of love,

Though impurities have multiplied among lovers.
