سَلُواask ساحِرَthe enchanter of الأَجفانِeyelids يُنعِمbestow favor بِوَعدِهِwith his promise
وَلاand not يَلوهِdelay it لَيَّthe twisting of التَثَنّيswaying لِقَدِّهِof his figure
Ask the enchanter of eyelids to bestow his promise,
Ask the enchanter of the eyelids who fulfills his promise
And not delay it as his swaying bends his figure.
And does not waver in his word to me
فَقَدfor indeed وَهَواهُby love of him أَلهَبَset aflame الشَوقُlonging أَضلُعيmy ribs
كَماas أُلهِبَتwas kindled نارُthe fire of الشَبابِyouth بِخَدِّهِin his cheek
For, by love of him, longing has set my ribs aflame,
For his love set my longing aflame and kindled my ribs
As youth's fire was kindled in his cheek.
As the fire of youth was kindled by his cheek
وَأَلبَسَand clothed جِسميmy body السُقمَillness مِنfrom سُقمِthe languor of طَرفِهِhis gaze
وَعَلّمand taught صَبرِيmy patience الضَعفَweakness مِنfrom ضُعفِthe weakness of عَهدِهِhis pledge
And clothed my body in illness from the languor of his gaze,
And clothed my body in the sickness from the sickness of his glance
And taught my patience weakness through the weakness of his pledge.
And taught my patience weakness from the frailty of his fidelity
فَياso, O قَمَراًmoon غارَvanished الهِلالُthe crescent بِوَجهِهِbefore his face
كَماas التَحَفَتwrapped themselves زُرقُblue السَحابِclouds بِبُردِهِin his mantle
So, O moon, before whose face the crescent vanished,
O you like a moon whose crescent humbled the new moon with its face
As blue clouds wrapped themselves in his mantle,
As the blue of clouds wraps around its coolness
تَطَّلعrise بِأُفقِيon my horizon فَهيَfor it is لَيلَةُthe night of أَسعُدِيmy good fortunes
كَماas لاحَshone بَدرُthe full moon التمِّfullness فيin أُفقِthe horizon of سَعدِهِits good fortune
Rise on my horizon, for this is the night of my good fortune,
You rise on my horizon, so it is the happiest night for me
As the full moon shone on the horizon of its good fortune.
As the full moon rose on the horizon of its good fortune
تَمَلّكتَyou took possession of رُوحِيmy soul وَالفُؤادَand the heart فَلَمand did not تَدَعleave
سِوىexcept رَمَقٍa last breath إِنif كُنتَyou are تَقبَلُaccepting أُهدِهِI offer it
You took possession of my soul and heart, and left nothing
You have taken possession of my soul and heart and left
But a last breath; if you will accept it, I offer it.
Nothing but a wisp, if you would accept my gift
بِنفسِيwith my life as ransom غَزالٌa gazelle فاتِرُlanguid اللَحظِgaze فاتِنٌbeguiling
غَداbecame الحُسنُbeauty عِقداًa necklace وَهوَand he وُسطىthe central jewel لِعِقدِهِof its necklace
My life for a gazelle, languid of gaze and beguiling!
With my soul a listless, charming gazelle
Beauty became a necklace, and he its central jewel.
Beauty tomorrow is a necklace and its centerpiece is his necklace
تَحيَّرَتِwere bewildered الأَلحاظُgazes مِنهُat him تَعَجُّباًin wonder
مَتىwhen اِمتَزَجَتmingled خَمرُthe wine of الرُضابِsaliva بِشَهدِهِwith its honey
Eyes were bewildered at him in wonder:
Eyes were confused by him in wonder
When did the wine of his saliva mingle with its honey?
When has the wine of cheeks mixed with the honey of his smile?
بِفِيهِin his mouth لَمىًa dusky lip-tint يَشفِيheals العَليلَthe ailing بِرَشفِهِby sipping it
عَلىover بَردٍhailstones يُذكِيkindles الغَليلَburning thirst بِبَردِهِwith its coolness
In his mouth, a dusky tint heals the ailing with a sip,
With lips whose draught would heal the sick with its sip
Over hailstones that kindle thirst with their coolness.
With a coolness that would revive the lovesick with its chill
أَماindeed وَعَقيقٍby carnelian ذابَmelted فيin دُرِّthe pearl of وَجنَةٍa cheek
أَذابَتmelted فُؤادَthe heart of الصَبِّthe lovesick one فيin نارِthe fire of وَجدِهِhis passion
Indeed, by carnelian melted into the pearl of a cheek
As for ruby-red wine melted in pearls and tenderness
That melted the lover's heart in the fire of his passion,
Which melted the heart of passion in the fire of his fervor
وَنَفحَةِand by a waft of مِسكٍmusk إِنif تَنَّسمhe breathes يُهدِهِhe bestows it
وَرائِقِand by pure دُرٍّpearls إِنif تَبَسَّمَhe smiles يُبدِهِhe reveals them
And by a waft of musk he bestows when he breathes,
The breath of musk, if inhaled, would seduce him
And by pure pearls he reveals when he smiles—
The scent of pearls, if he smiles, would express it
لَقَدindeed خِفتُI feared أَنthat يَقضِيwould prove fatal السُرورُjoy بِقُربِهِat his nearness
عَلَيَّto me وَلَمand did not أَنعَمI enjoy بِساعَةِat the hour of وَعدِهِhis promise
I truly feared that joy at his nearness would prove fatal
Indeed, I feared that nearness would end my bliss
To me, before I had savored his promised hour.
And I would not enjoy the time of his promise
فَياso, O رَبِّmy Lord أَنِّسنِيcomfort me بِقُربِwith nearness to مَزارِهِhis abode
وَأَنِّسهُand make him friendly لِيto me مِنfrom نَفرَةِthe aversion of الصَدِّrejection وَأَهدِهِand grant him
So, my Lord, comfort me with nearness to his abode,
So, my Lord, delight me with the nearness of his tomb
And make him friendly to me, no longer shying away in rejection, and grant him to me.
And delight him to me from the aloofness of rejection and gift him
